COMMUNICATION 291P

RADIO PRACTICUM

OFFERED: FALL, SPRING, SUMMER

INSTRUCTOR: HOWARD E. ESPRAVNIK

Com 291P is a practical course where students learn by doing!  The biggest class goal is to learn radio station operations by obtaining actual on-air experience at the college station, WVCP 88.5 FM.  The student has the option of taking the course for one, two, or three credit hours.

One Credit

Students taking one credit hour will do a weekly live radio show, sign the weekly staff notes, complete a couple short assignments, and take five quizzes over the course of the semester.

Two Credits

Students taking two credit hours will add a weekly responsibility in news.  This usually entails being a news reader one day per week for the noon newscast.

Three Credits

Students enrolled in three credit hours will add a weekly third activity to the responsibilities listed above.  The third activity is a job that helps the station and usually takes about an hour to complete.

Typical third activity jobs include finding and writing a news story with a sound actuality, running the controls for a noon newscast, voice-tracking a radio show, updating music charts, or doing sports play-by-play.
